Recreational vehicles are more like a second home than an upscale camping experience. After retirement, they’re an affordable and comfortable way to travel not just the United States but across North America. Especially during the winter months, it’s easy to find communities of 55+ recreational vehicle owners in the Southwest who have the same hobbies and interests. If you’re purchasing or upgrading an RV to stay at a mobile home community, these are the three common recreational vehicle types.

Class A Motorhomes

The premier recreational vehicle model is Class A, which provides the utmost luxury while living on the road. It’s the ideal RV type to park at a 55+ community like Superstition Buttes. We offer the largest RV spaces of any mobile home park in the Phoenix area.

Pros of a Class A recreational vehicle

  • Spacious, with individual bedrooms
  • Large towing capacity so that owners can bring any size passenger vehicle
  • Luxury finishes and amenities

Cons of a Class A recreational vehicle

  • Difficult to maneuver for inexperienced drivers
  • Expensive, with some models priced over $1 million
  • Poor fuel economy

A Class A RV isn’t practical for camping or short overnight stays between long drives across the country. However, it’s ideal for snowbirds who want to head south for the winter and stay in a 55+ community for the coldest months of the year.

Class B Motorhomes

Class B is on the opposite end of the spectrum from Class A. It’s modestly sized but much easier to drive and park. For individuals who plan on spending most of their retirement on the road, Class B can simply go more places than Class A. Of all the recreational vehicles, it also has the best fuel economy.

Pros of a Class B recreational vehicle

  • Inexpensive, with high-end models available for around $100 thousand
  • Easy to drive and maneuver as they’re built on van chassis
  • Great fuel economy

Cons of Class B recreational vehicle

  • Limited storage space
  • More cramped living quarters, though they still have a full-size kitchen, bathroom, and living room
  • Doesn’t have the towing capacity to bring an additional vehicle

Class B’s smaller size and improved fuel economy mean making sacrifices in other areas, such as space and comfort. Newer models still have luxury finishes and amenities that make life on the road comfortable.

Class C Motorhomes

Class C is a hybrid of Class A and Class B features. It provides ample living space but places the bed above the cab, making it hard to access, and it may feel cramped for some travelers after weeks or months on the road.

Pros of a Class C recreational vehicle

  • Least expensive of the three recreational vehicle types
  • Modest towing capacity can still bring a smaller passenger vehicle
  • Larger than the Class B, without the tricky maneuverability of Class A

Cons of Class C recreational vehicle

  • The over-the-cab sleeping area can be difficult to access
  • Average fuel economy between Class B and Class A

Class C is ideal for retirees planning to balance time on the road with stays in RV parks. It’s easier to take the Class C camping and still bring an additional vehicle on the road.
